During the period from 1945 to 2011 there were 35 submarines in service in the German Bundeswehr. Their lengths varied between 23,1 and 76,86 metres . They weighed between 23 and 1819 tons. They were powered solely by diesel-electric motors.

“The Hum” is a phenomenon during which extremely low acoustic frequencies occur without apparent source, attacking its subjects psyche. In online discussions the communication of submarines is being made responsible for the suffering. Chronological mission data, size and type of motorisation of the German Army’s submarine fleet serve as the base for the sound installation’s score. A transducer for low frequencies transfers vibration onto a transparent water container, which is placed in the beam of a projector. The rays are broken in different amounts according to the movement of the water ripples and are reflected upon a screen.
