Deepstaria Enigmatica (2018)

4:3 VIDEO, 7:50 MINS

The work investigates the aesthetics of a YouTube video of the deep sea jelly fish Deepstaria Enigmatica. The falling folds of skin of the jelly fish behave in a similar way as a piece of falling cloth in the movie "Malá Morská Villa" / "The Little Mermaid" (1979). In the montage, scenes from the movie and material from documentaries and educational videos are set side by side, mixing scientific visualisations from the fields of water mechanics and marine biology with fragments of the fairy tale. Flowing and at times violently permeating movements are telling an alternative version of the Little Mermaid, which goes beyond the narrative of fragile femininity.
